Can Scribd Make E-book Subscriptions Mainstream?

Suddenly, every company wants to be the Netflix for e-books. Scribd, the popular document sharing service, unveiled a full-fledged subscription service on Tuesday, which lets users pay $8.99 a month for unlimited access to e-books and other written works. The key selling point of the service is that Scribd has partnered with HarperCollins — one of the big five publishers — to get access to the majority of the publisher’s backlist catalogue.
